This is a very special time of the year. Every day seems to be a special day. Last Thursday was Thanksgiving day, Friday was “Black Friday,” Saturday was “Rivalry Saturday” (for all the football fans), Sunday was the beginning of Advent, Monday was “Cyber Monday,” and Tuesday was “Giving Tuesday.” All those days are “special days.” They all have their own label that identifies them as beyond the ordinary. These are not just any days. These are special days. Of course, if every day is special, the really extraordinary day is the day that is nothing special. As I write this, that would be today. Today is just “Every day Wednesday.”
Today is not a special day. It is just a day, a typical day, with nothing unique or special about it day. It is like every day, or at least like every other “not special day.” In other words, today is the type of day that makes up the routine of our lives. It is the day of the majority of days. It is a common day. It is a normal day. It is just a day. It is “Every day Wednesday.”
The thing about every day Wednesday is that it is representative of the place where we generally live our lives. Of course, we all have special days, like birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, and Easter, and we all have special moments or events that make an ordinary day special. Some great examples might be graduating from school, getting a big promotion, or buying your first car.
Most of our lives are spent living out the normal and routine kinds of days, where nothing is really special. And in spite of the fact that God is very present in special days, I think God does His greatest work in the routine days of life.
Isaiah 40 speaks of those who wait for or trust in the Lord as gaining new strength. They will be able to soar like an eagle, run and not get weary, and walk and not faint. At first glance, it is easy to see this as a testimony to how wonderful the special days are. The days in which we soar like an eagle are awesome!
These are the days when we feel like we have the whole world by the tail and we can accomplish anything. Everything seems to come easy, and life seems fantastic. It feels like we can run and not get weary. Nothing wears us down, and we are on top of everything. It all seems to come easy, and life is good, even exciting. These days, like are the easy days. It is easy when we can soar like an eagle or run and not get tired. Everybody can handle days like this.
In contrast, the normal “every day” is when it can be tough. When nothing special is lifting your spirits, and nothing out of the ordinary is making things exciting. Having the grace to keep walking through the long, tough, everyday Wednesday is truly powerful.
Those who will wait in faith in God will have new strength. It will be a strength that will enable you to soar on the mountaintop days, run and not be weary in those really exciting times, and, best of all, just keep on going on all those routine days when it would be so easy to stop.
God gives new mercies and strength for the everyday.
