The past eight weeks we have been taking a deep look at what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. We have seen some important characteristics of a disciple, and we have discovered some tools that help us be a faithful disciple. There is one more aspect of true discipleship that must be mentioned. Disciples make disciples.
It is an unquestionable scriptural reality that disciples are called to make disciples. This is part of how we follow Jesus. First, this is the commission that Jesus gave us. “Go into all the world and make disciples of every nation…(Matthew 28:19-20)” This is the command of Jesus to His disciples shortly before His ascension. It is also what He and others modeled for us. Jesus had disciples, and later Paul had disciples. Paul instructed his disciple, Timothy, to make disciples.
“The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
- 2 Timothy 2:2
Friend, as disciples, we are called to invest our lives in others, helping them to become disciples who will also make disciples. This will require a personal investment of your time, prayer, and patience in the lives of others, but it is an investment that will bear much fruit.
