I am not much of a “handyman” when it comes to doing things around the home. Sometimes, it is because I don’t know what I am doing, other times, I just don’t have the tools needed to do the job. Having the right tools makes all the difference!
God has given us tools in our lives to help us grow deeper in our relationship with Him called spiritual disciplines. They are the primary way God builds godliness in our lives. One of the most powerful tools we have is prayer.
Have you ever thought about prayer as being a tool God uses to help you grow as a disciple? Oswald Chambers said,
“Prayer does not equip us for greater work.
Prayer is the greater work.”
He is not saying prayer has little impact on the ministry we do for God, but simply that the greatest result of prayer is what God does in us as we pray.
The spiritual discipline of prayer is an essential tool for every disciple. Our depth of intimacy with God is directly related to the time we spend with Him in prayer. Prayer is not only important for us to practice, but also for us to encourage in the lives of those whom we are discipling.
