Do you know what is the best-selling book of all time? It is the Bible, God’s holy Word. Sadly, there are many more Bible’s purchased than actually read and studied faithfully. The scriptures are God’s revelation to us, and the spiritual discipline of spending time in God’s Word is one of the most powerful and effective tools that God uses in our lives. Growing deeper in God’s Word is a significant mark of being a disciple. Paul wrote to his disciple Timothy,
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,
a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly
handles the word of truth.
- 2 Timothy 2:15
Our hand can show us a great way to make sure we are doing our best to incorporate God’s Word into our lives. Each of our five fingers can represent a different way in which we need to spend time with the Scriptures. These five ways are:
Hearing the Word
Reading the Word
Studying the Word
Memorizing the Word
Meditating on the Word
Just like we need all five fingers working together for our hand to properly and most fully handle an object, all five of these disciplines are important for us to properly handle the Word of God. Are you making good use of all five ways to grow in your knowledge of God’s Word? Which ones are needing some extra attention?
