Have you ever thought about what it takes to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, actually following Him day by day? Everyone has his or her own personality, but there are some characteristics consistent with everyone who is a true follower of Christ.
The most fundamental characteristic of a disciple is having a Heart for God.
Psalm 42:1 describes what a heart for God is like:
“As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God”
You may not have seen a deer drinking from a stream, but Friend, have you perhaps seen a panting, thirsty dog lapping water from a dish or a stream? They desire not just a taste of cool, refreshing water, but instead, they want all they can get.
In the same way, a disciple has such a desire for God and the things of God that they will hunger and thirst for more of God. As a disciple experiences the presence of God, this longing continues to grow. A true disciple has a heart that longs for more of God.
Do you long for time with God? Do you desire to know Him more deeply and fully? What are you doing daily to fulfill this longing?
