In the Bible, the apostle Paul states all scripture is inspired by God, yet Jesus makes it clear there is a “first and greatest” commandment. This commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Everything else we say and do flows out of our love for God. This is why the first of the ILI Eight Core Values is Intimacy with God: “God looks for consecrated men and women who live life from an intimate relationship with God.”

THE SECRET IS IN THE GRAMMAR
Most Christians know The Great Commission, the final words of Jesus before He ascended into heaven. These words were said to the disciples, but they are marching orders for the whole Church. There is great importance in clearly understanding what Jesus meant through His words. However, it is possible to know these words by heart and still miss the depth of their meaning by simply failing to pay attention to a secret hidden in the grammar, more specifically, the four verbs contained in the text. So, let’s read it again:
WHY DO WE CLIMB MOUNTAINS?
Last year, Hollywood released a movie called Everest. The movie is based on a true story of a group of people who set out to climb the tallest mountain on the planet. As you can imagine, in this dramatic story of struggle, defeat, glory, and tragedy, some characters made it to the top, while others did not. Some made it back to the bottom, others didn’t. Some returned in one piece, while others were not as fortunate. As I watched the movie, I found myself asking the question, “Why do we climb mountains?“

Four Ways to Conserve Leadership Fuel
Our society is tremendously dependent on oil and the fuel it generates. I have traveled the world, and in almost every place I have been, people move around in vehicles which run on gas, diesel, or ethanol. Our dependence on fuel is so great that one of the common apocalyptic themes in movies and television shows is a future where fuel is scarce or extinct — It causes chaos! The world as we know it depends on fuel. We cannot run on empty.

The Journey of Self-Leadership
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon after traveling 230,000 miles through space. Just days earlier, on July 16, the Saturn V rocket blasted off into space. This was not the beginning of the journey, though. The real expedition began years earlier with the decision by American president John F. Kennedy to embark on the mission. Leadership is a lifelong development journey. Wherever you and I are in leadership today, our journey began long ago. My own journey probably started some time during fifth grade when I was (literally) ordered into a leadership role in middle school.
Beautiful Scars
When we talk about the risen Christ, we often use the term “nail-scarred hands.” Any picture or movie of the resurrected Jesus will include the scars from the nails that pierced His hands and feet, as well as the wound in His side. The remnants of Jesus’ crucifixion wounds are significant in the scriptures, but they are also significant in our own lives.

Small is the New Big
Most people may not know who John Wesley was, but I would argue many (particularly evangelical Christians) have heard his name before. John Wesley was an Anglican priest who founded Methodism in the seventeenth century, but his influence endures today. He was the leader of a spiritual and social revival that changed the face of England, North America, and much of the world. Wesley was a prolific writer and a powerful preacher who spoke to thousands. So, with all of these great accomplishments, what is Wesley’s greatest legacy?
Dangerous Love
Love is part of being human. After all, we were created in God’s image, and God is love. We love and are happier for it, but at the same time, every form of love carries some level of danger. But is this dangerous love worth the risk?
